چکیده

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, has become a broad subject and is a very active area for current research. This paper describes the main biological events involved in angiogenesis and their importance in cancer progression. In the first section, a fundamental overview of tumour biology is presented. In the second section, the biology of healthy blood vessels is described and, in the third section, the mechanisms of cell migration and proliferation, which are crucial to angiogenesis, are discussed. In the fourth section, a detailed account of tumour-induced angiogenesis is given, whilst the proand anti-angiogenic factors involved are reviewed in the fifth section. Finally, the processes of tumour invasion and metastasis are examined in the sixth section.

Inhibition of angiogenic factor- and tumour-induced angiogenesis by gamma linolenic acid.

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is an essential feature of malignant tumour development. Gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), inhibits the growth and metastasis of a variety of tumour cells, including breast, prostate, pancreatic cancer and hepatoma cells and also has anti-metastatic effects on endothelial cells. In the current study, we tested ...

NF-κB-inducing kinase is a key regulator of inflammation-induced and tumour-associated angiogenesis

Angiogenesis is essential during development and in pathological conditions such as chronic inflammation and cancer progression. Inhibition of angiogenesis by targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) blocks disease progression, but most patients eventually develop resistance which may result from compensatory signalling pathways. In endothelial cells (ECs), expression of the pro-angi...

Use of angiogenesis inhibitors in tumour treatment.

Advances in molecular biology have permitted the characterisation of mechanisms underlying angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is a crucial process in tumour pathogenesis as it sustains malignant cells with nutrients and oxygen. It is well known that tumour cells secrete various growth factors including VEGF, which triggers endothelial cells to form new capillaries. Preventing the expansion of new blood...

Background & Aim: Tumour angiogenesis is essential for tumour growth and appears to play an important role both in invasive growth and metastasis. Basal cell carcinomas(BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas(SCCs) of the skin are derived from a similar cell type but differ in the invasive and metastatic potential. This study investigates whether the behaviour of these tumours could be explained...

Physiological role of adenosine and its receptors in tissue hypoxia-induced

It is well known that the metabolic factors play an important role in the regulation of angiogenesis. Increased metabolic activity leads to decreased oxygen levels and causes tissue hypoxia. Hypoxia starts different signals to stimulate angiogenesis and promotes oxygen delivery to tissues. It has been suggested that released adenosine from hypoxic tissues plays a vital role in angiogenesis. ...
